The righteous Prince (Allegory of good governance), Lambertus Suavius, c. 1560 - c. 1570 Canvas Print
The righteous Prince (Allegory of good governance). The blind monarch sitting on throne, with scepter in his hands and with closed eyes, surrounded by councillors without hands. At the bottom an inscription and two Bible texts. The performance is based on the emblem of Andrea Alciati with explanations in Dutch texts: the good monarch is blind and judges without regard to the person and his councillors are insensitive to gifts (depicted by their handless arms).
