The solemn installation of the University of Ghent by the Prince of Orange (later King William I) in the throne room of the town hall on October 9, 1817. View in the interior of ghent city hall where a large group of people has been gathered to attend the ceremony. On an elevation are the crown prince and the other important guests, above a large painting under a canopy. On both sides of the stage there are two lions lined up with a lance with banner and shield with the letter W. Preliminary study for a larger painting.
