The upside-down world, Pieter van der Borcht (I), c. 1576 - 1608 Canvas Print

The print shows a landscape where a farm is looted by a group of soldiers in the background. In the foreground is a rebus depicted that gives allegorical commentary on the political situation in the Netherlands anno 1576-1579. The rebus should be read from left to right. On the far left are the personifications of Nijd (Nijt) and Oorlog (Avenge). Together, they hold a huge upside-down globe. A goat (with) standing between them and a prayer cord (Gheveijnst) complete the first sentence: 'Nijt en Gheveijnst avenged wood de weerelt ist'. In the middle of the print is the sign of fidelity (two collapsed hands), a duck (ende) and the sleeping, naked personification of Love (Love sleeps detprives). This sentence reads as follows: 'Faithful and Love slaept deprits'. Finally, on the far right are a sod (soo), an attic roof (pine) and the personification of Tijd (Tyt) that opens a book with a rolling pin on the left page (well) and on the right page a ladder and the letter t (learns). The last sentence reads 'so so tyt wel leert'.
