The Whale-oil Refinery near the Village of Smerenburg, Cornelis de Man, 1639 Canvas Print
Smeerenburg on Spitsbergen was a settlement of Dutch whalers. The painter never went there and combined images and stories of them that he knew. The mountain on the left is probably that of Jan Mayen island (Beerenberg), next to which the masts of whalers can be seen. In the tear-cooker ovens close to the beach, pieces of whale bacon chopped to slices are cooked and processed into liquid tears. On the left side of the beach is a whale carcass that is being fled. At the back right are the barracks of the men.
