Travelling Watch, Salomon Hendrikszoon Coster, c. 1650 Canvas Print

Travel watch made of silver. The oval silver case has no glass, so one has to open the lid to be able to see the silver dial, with only an hour hand. The movement has a spring barrel, which is connected by a chain to a snek, which is mounted on the first wheel. The force is transferred by three wheels to the last wheel, the so-called escapement wheel that converts the rotating movement of the wheels into the back-and-forth movement of the balance. Here the escapement is the so-called spindle corridor, in which the escapement wheel in turn pushes away two protrusions on the balance axis in the opposite direction. The wheel of the balance, which slows down the back-and-forth movement due to its mass, is located under the beautifully crafted gap on the rear platform. The gait of the watch can be regulated in two ways, of which there are two dials on the back plate. the larger of the two, in the middle of the top, is attached to the spindle of the spring barrel and can be adjusted with the help of a worm gear. This allows one to increase or decrease the tension of the spring. The engraving of the second, smaller dial differs from the first, and is a later addition. It serves to regulate the active length of the coil spring lying under the balance. The change also included the weighting of the balance, under which an extra ring was applied with six rivets. A special peculiarity about this watch are the two oil portraits, which are painted in the lid and in the back of the case.
