Triumph of Luther, anonymous, 1566 - 1568 Canvas Print
Triumph of Luther, ca. 1520-1550. The church reformers led by Luther in contrast to the Catholics led by Pope Leo X. Luther standing on a hill with the Bible in his hands, at his feet an army of reformers including Melanchton and Hus. On the left the united forces of all kinds of militant exponents from the Roman church: Jesuits, monks with torches, church scholars with writing pens and armed with liturgical objects. Centrally the pope sat on a shaky throne which is about to fall. In the foreground Friedrich Stapellage (Staphylus), a prostestant converted to Catholicism. Title print of a pamphlet from 1568. Cartoon on the Roman church.
