Triumphal Chariot with War (Bellum), Cornelis Cort, 1564 Canvas Print

Triumphal Chariot with War (Bellum), Cornelis Cort, 1564 Canvas Print

A man with a lightning bolt and sword in his hand, the personification of war, rides a triumphal car past a burning city. Soldiers and prisoners walk behind the car. Other personifications, such as Defamation and Hunger, run alongside the car. At the feet of War kneels the personification of poverty (Inopia), which is mistakenly called Humilitas (Humility) on the print. Print from a series of nine prints with triumphal cars from the Antwerp Circumcision bypass of 1561. The personifications on the wagons together represent the cycle of human action.
