View of Sommelsdijk in Suriname, Bienfait, 1827 Canvas Print
The surgeon's establishment Sommelsdijk was located at the junction of the Commewijne and the Cottica river. Here, sick enslaved men, women and children of African origin from the nearby plantations were treated by a surgeon when good care could not be provided on the plantation. In 1827 J.R. de Vries was the surgeon on duty.
