View of the Coffee Plantation Marienbosch in Surinam, Willem de Klerk, 1829 - 1876 Canvas Print
View of the Marienbosch coffee plantation on the Commewijne River. Between two groups of palm trees and a waterwork (loossluis) there are several wooden plantation buildings on the other side of a canal. On a stone floor between the buildings, enslaved people of African origin spread coffee beans so that they can dry in the sun. In addition to coffee, cotton and cocoa were also grown on Marienbosch. On the canal sails a canoe, a small cargo boat. On the path along the canal walks a enslaved woman with child and a man with hat and walking stick. According to the inscription at the bottom right, the painting was made after a drawing by A.L. Brockmann.
