Wine fountain and cooler, Alger Mensma (attributed to), 1731 Canvas Print
The oval cooling vessel has two ears with hinged handles. The foot rests with a hollow profile on the low, straight-walled base. It is made up of a convex band and a constricted part on which the barrel rests. The band is decorated all around with eight imposed motifs, alternating between a culot and a shell. The barrel consists of a convex belly and a slightly widened, slightly constricted upper part that extends wide to the scalloped upper edge that has four segment-shaped swung-in sections in which glasses can be hung. These are separated by straights from the raised lobes, wide on the sides and narrow ones at the front and back. A profile edge is imposed along the upper edge. The handles made up of C and S volutes are decorated with leaf volutes and curling lips. The ears have deepened, roughened sides; the handles have beveled corners. On the front of the vessel, two reliefs are laid on top of each other. On the upper, against a background of flags, the crowned coat of arms of the Republic is depicted, flanked by the letters AA (Admiralty of Amsterdam) and placed in front of two crossed anchors, surrounded by a fence symbolizing the Dutch garden. On either side, there are sea gods with three-toothed sea gods, leaning on affuits. At the left is a globe and in the foreground are cannonballs. The lower relief consists of an oval, surrounded by a profile edge shield in a frame of weaponry: chainmails, helmets, shields, rifles, clubs, swords, trumpets and drums, and laurel branches. Engraved on the shield This Cooling Vessel is by the/Collegie ter Admiraliteyt in/Amsterdam resided, worshipped at the Capiteyn/Cornelis Schryver, in recognition/vande veroveringe van het Zaleese/Roof Schip, on the 10th of August 1730.
