Wine fountain and cooler, Alger Mensma (attributed to), 1731 - 1732 Canvas Print

The round, vase-shaped fountain has a tap, two ears with hinged handles and a loose lid. The foot rests with a hollow profile on the low, straight-walled base. It is made up of a convex band and a constricted part, topped by a convex and a constricted ring, on which the body rests. On the foot, three fan motifs are imposed, which curl over the base, where they are decorated with a leaf. Between these large motifs, a smaller shell motif has been imposed. On both sides, a rectangular eye is attached to the base. In the foot, under the bottom of the body, a ring is attached to an eye. The body has a low, convex belly on which rests a high, slightly constricted, widening part, which is closed at the bottom and top by a widened, hollow profile and which is crowned by a wide, convex edge above which an S-shaped arched and a constricted part and the convex mouth edge. The curved tap is four-sided, with beveled corners, and has a starter of four curling tabs. At the end, where a profile edge runs around, it is decorated at the top and sides with curling lips. In the middle he has a cubic widening, in which the rotating tap fits. This has a grip in the form of a symmetrical, open cartouche, made up of S-volutes decorated with profiles and leaves and crowned by a raised culot on a profiled pedestal. At the bottom it is closed by a toll shape. The ears made up of C and S volutes and the handles made up exclusively of C-volutes are decorated with leaf volutes and curling lips. The ears have deepened, roughened sides; the handles have beveled corners. The belly shows at the front, around the beginning of the crane, an oval field with along the sides and the underside a frame of shells with a fish on both sides and a snake on the right. In the field is engraved Anno 1732. The CompS: Scheepen Purmerlust en ter Horst, inden/ Jaare 1730. by Four Robbers to Algiers on gebragt and by the /Loffelyke Conduiters of Mr. Capt. Cornelis Schryver/as Commandr: van s' Lands Oorlog Scheepen, there ter/Reede leggende. On the back, the abdomen is decorated with some arms and shields placed on top of each other, the upper of which shows a mask, amidst laurel branches. On both sides, two winged, blowing wind gods are shown in the clouds. The high upper part of the body is decorated with a sea all around along the underside. On the front is a dolphin swimming in it, flanked by shell-blowing tritones, a crocodile, dolphins and a seaob. The dolphin wears a contoured, scaly shield with a leaf-shaped, fringed with leaf turded colonies, topped together, topped by a fan motif. On the shield is an oval, framed by a profile medallion placed with a sailing ship with a banner with the monogram VOC of the Dutch East India Company. The shield is surrounded by a unicorn, elephants, a camel, an ostrich against a background of palms and a lion. At the rear sails a galleon for which tritones blowing on shells diverge. On the nave rests a scaly shield, similar to that on the front but simpler and partially decorated with laurel branches. The oval medallion shows the coat of arms Writer. The shield is surrounded by affuiten, bollards, banners, drums, swords, shields and a helmet. The convex band is decorated with four mutually different fesenes of shells, which are hung on the corners with ribbons on nails, from which a small bunch of shells always depends. The constricted part under the mouth edge is imposed with four rosettes. The lid is made up of a sphere and a hollow part, topped by a stage with a vaulted wall. On this rests the four-sided button with beveled corners, made up of a profiled base, a round, constricted trunk and a sphere, the lower part of which is, as it were, concealed in curling lips. The crowning glory is a round, profiled, vase-shaped bud. The convex part of the lid shows four imposed leaves. The imposed decorations, the tap, the ears and handles and the lid button are cast; the reliefs are driven.
