Young shepherd with a bull, Adriaen van de Velde, 1659 Canvas Print
First print from a series of ten prints with different animals. Van de Velde took over the theme with the young shepherd and the bull from an early painting by Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael from 1646. In the landscape with a farm of Ruisdael, the shepherd and the bull with the striking white spot on the flank are placed small in the composition. Van de Velde detached the group from the original context and carefully followed every detail in his rendering. The shepherd who blows his horn while holding the bull on a rope is standing large in the foreground in a slightly rolling landscape.
