Allegory of Human Nature, Jan Saenredam, 1580 - 1607 Canvas Print

Beneficentia, the personification of benevolence, sits on a chair and is stabbed from behind by evil in the guis of a naked man. A knee of the man leans on a skull and a snake, which bites into his own tail as a symbol of eternity, hangs around his right leg. There's a coffin on the right. With her left hand, Beneficentia gives the sun to the naked man. The moon gives them to the woman in front of her. Between them lies a tied-up lion, licking a dog. A mouse gnaws its rope. In the background some obelisks. The performance has an ornamental frame. On the left, the personification of fertility gives birth to a child, brought to life by apollo's breath as a symbol of good. On the right is a child who receives his breath from Evil. At the top left, a woman breastfeeds a child. At the top right, a woman feeds a child with a spoon.
