Altarpiece with the Virgin and Child Enthroned between Saint Jerome and Saint Nicholas of Myra, Benedetto Buglioni, 1502 Canvas Print
On a throne with a bar-shaped backrest, part of a wall divided in two by a horizontal frame, Mary sits with her legs slightly to the right and the head slightly to the left. She holds the naked child, sitting on her lap, by an arm and a leg. It points its finger at his mouth and has an apple in the left hand. To the left of the throne, Hieronymus stands on the left leg and with the right one bent. He has turned something to Mary and has set his sights on her. He holds a stone against the bare chest with his right hand and holds up the cloak struck to the right with his left. On his curved left arm hangs the cardinal's hat, at his feet lies the lion. To the right of Mary is St. Nicholas, also slightly turned towards her and looking in front of her. In the right he has the crooked staff and in the left, with which he holds up his choir cap, also a book; at his feet the three golden balls. Mary wears a veil and a cloak closed under the neck, which hangs over the left arm and is struck to the right over the knees, so that her robe can only be seen in a few places. Hieronymus wears a cloak over his girded, kemelshare rug, which depends on the left shoulder, runs along behind the back and is struck to the right. St. Nicholas with mitre and gloves, on which gemstones adorn, wears a choir cap over the choir shirt girded around the waist with an agrafe on the chest. The predella with a protruding egg frame at the top and such a list of leaf motifs at the bottom is divided into five fields by balusters. In the middle field, Christ's tomb is depicted between two rock walls, in which he, showing his wounds, stands with his arms spread. Next to the tomb are lance and reed stalk with sponge. In the left field, hieronymus kneels in profile, in a rocky landscape in front of a cross; before him the reclining lion, who looks up to him with an open mouth, and whom he seems to address. In the right field, St. Nicholas stands as a bishop in front of a building with a barred window, within which the three daughters of the impoverished nobleman sit next to a young man who has turned away from them. The holy one holds in the raised hand a golden ball, which he will throw by the window. On the far left the emblem of the founder Catherine, a C and a cross, and on the far right her family coat of arms, a climbing lion. The main scene, is enclosed by a main frame, which rests on both sides on two capitals, including pilasters with kandelaber ornaments. The main frame consists of an architrave with leaf decoration, a frieze with a four times repeating putto between horns of abundance and leaf vines. Above the profiled cornice with egg frame, bead molding and one with leaf motif. On the underpiece of the throne: QVESTA - TAVOLA - AFACTA - FARE - SVORA - CATERINA - FIGLIVOLA - DITOMASO - DISALVESTRO - DI NVCCARELLO - NE - MCCCCC2.
