An officer of lascarins sitting on a bench, Esaias Boursse, 1662 Canvas Print
There's a man sitting on a couch outside. The bank's up against a wall. Perhaps it is made of a wooden seating board inserted into a stone wall that serves as a handrail. The floor is covered with tiles. It may be a seat at a gatehouse of the fort. The man is dressed in a thickly wrapped Singalees hip dress (kambaya) down to the knee, with a wide band around the waist. Above, a short buttoned-up jacket (hettaya) with long sleeves, pleated bottom edge and an embellished flat collar. He has long wavy hair, a wide moustache and beard, and wears a high hat with a folded edge, decoratively indented. His hand holds a long folded palm leaf that rests behind his legs on the ground. It is a leaf of the talipat palm (Corypha umbraculifera; Sinhalese: tala; Tamil: kudaipanai). Unfolded, the blade was used as a rain and awning due to the higher positions. The hand of the curved left arm supports at the waist, in front of the short sword (kastane) on his left hip. The handle decorated with a mythical animal (serapendiya) protrudes above his hand; the sheath leans against the edge of the bench. The cord with which the sword is tied is clearly visible. On his belly hangs a VOC badge on a long single chain that is beaten around the neck; this indicates his service at the VOC in the position of chief officer – mudaliyar (modliar, modaliar) – who leads a group of welding corridors, Singalese mercenaries. It is probably a Singalees belonging to the high goviya caste. Sheet 70 from a sketchbook with 117 sheets.
