Bacchus Finding Ariadne on Naxos, Adriaen de Vries, c. 1611 Canvas Print
In a classic room, a naked young woman lies on a curtain-covered four-poster bed, slumbering on her left. It has the hand of the upwardly curved left arm above the head and against the headscarf; with the judge she supports the cushion, which she is facing. From the left comes the naked Bacchus, who lights up the curtain with both hands. He is caught by the arm by a satyr, who lights it with the torch. The satyr stands on one leg and has the other bent over the bed. Behind him a table with cloth, on which a vase of flowers; in the architectural background heavy pillars and an arch. On the plinth, on which the bed is located, there is an Amor to the left. He lights up the bedcloth above the owl's head, which has a claw on its knee. In front of the Amor are bow and quiar, more to the left the slippers of the sleeping star. The Floris-style beddepaw goes back to a partially upholstered human torso. The curtains show a floral pattern on the outside; they are trimmed with fringe, as well as the tablecloth, which shows an edge with tendrils. The pillow with tassels has an edge of tendrils, the hanging bedcloth an edge with rosettes.
