Beheading of the Roman judge Papinian, Willem Isaacsz. of Swanenburg, 1606 Canvas Print
The legal scholar Aemilius Papinianus has just been beheaded by order of Emperor Caracalla. The executioner gives papinian's head to Caracalla. Papinian had tried to mediate between the Brothers Caracalla and Geta, who were both emperors. In the background, Caracalla, or one of his soldiers, kills Geta in their mother's lap. Below the performance two four-line verses in Latin. The print is part of an album.
