Belgian order of knighthood (Order of Leopold), received by Willem Drees, anonymous, c. 1949 Canvas Print
Blue-clad box with the decorations of the Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold, Kingdom of Belgium, granted to Prime Minister W. Drees. The decorations consist of the order sign with shoulder strap and the order star. The order sign is a white-encillary Maltese cross hanging from a king's crown, with oak and laurel leaves draped between the arms and a pennant draped on two sticks between the tips of the lower arm. The middle medallion shows a climbing, crowned lion to the left (the lion of Belgium) on a black surface and in gold letters on a red surface the description 'L'Union fait la Force'; the reverse shows an elaborate mirror monogram with the letters L R (Leopold Rex) in gold on a black surface, surrounded by a golden laurel wreath on a red surface. The order sign hangs from a purple shoulder strap. The silver order star has eight glasses, with the middle medallion with lion and circumscription, equal to the front of the order sign, still surrounded here with a spectacled gold border. The lid is lined with white silk on the inside, the ornamentation is on a yellow velvet elevation, under which the shoulder strap lies. The Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold was granted to Prime Minister W. Drees by Charles, Prince of Belgium, Regent, in Brussels on 10 March 1949.
