The siege of Kanpur was an important moment in the Indian uprising of 1857. Around 1860, the British placed a memorial in the well of Bibighar, designed by Carlo Marochetti. The statue of the angel with peace symbols was moved to the Memorial Church in Kanpur after India's independence.
