Cartoon about the Doleantie of 1886, Jan Holswilder, 1886 Canvas Print
A group of prisoners comes from the church after the service. A fox asks if they liked the sermon to which they answered in the negative. The dialogue below the image refers to the events on January six, 1886. Then Abraham Kuyper, together with like-minded people, broke into the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. They stole the title deeds of the church and kept the building occupied. In that year Kuyper founded the Reformed Church that separated itself from the Dutch Reformed Church. The fox refers to G. J. Vos, secretary of the regional church administration.
