Cartoon comparing the reign of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt to the tyranny of the Duke of Alva, 1618, anonymous, 1618 Canvas Print

Satirical print comparing the reign of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt to the tyranny of the Duke of Alva, 1618. In the performance Johan van Oldenbarnevelt sits around a table with his supporters including Gilles van Ledenberg. By folding the top half of the print, it is revealed that the portraits correspond to the Duke of Alva with the Blood Council, including Cardinal Granvelle, Brother Cornelis and some bishops, in the background the execution of Egmond and Horne in 1568. In the dialogue printed in two columns below the print, Beste-maet, who sees Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, and Botte-maet, who sees Alva, describe the performances. Finally, 'Iapick van Ouwerschie' solves the misunderstanding.
