Cartoon on the brotherhood of the red cross [the Rosicrucians], Pieter Nolpe, 1623 - 1647 Canvas Print
Satire with the painting of the Antichrist, ca. 1650. Interior of an inn in which a painter paints the portrait of the summoned Antichrist or devil on the bare rear of a bent over man with a crown on the head. The devil stands on a cloud of smoke, a globe and pliers. On the left at a table a man with a glass of wine, a lute player and a young woman. Behind the painter a fool with a top hat, large collar and large nose. Behind it is a man with a model of a castle. On the right, a Dutch sailor with a fur hat in his hand looks on. In the caption a verse of two times five lines. The verse speaks of a meeting of the brotherhood of the red cross [the Rosicrucians or Rosicrucians], the clothing of two of the persons is decorated on the sleeve with a cross. The performance probably relates to the poet Matthew Gansneb Tengnagel.
