Cartoon on the Schouwburg strijd, c. 1685, Bernard Picart, 1716 - 1738 Canvas Print

Cartoon on the mismanagement of Joan Pluimer and Govert Bidloo, who were regents from 1679 to 1681, and from 1681 to 1687 tenants of the Amsterdamse Schouwburg. In the middle is Pluimer with a feather on his head, a jar of liquor in his hand and a winch under his arm. For him a servant with a pie in the shape of a deer. To his right, a greyhound holding a stick towards him. On the left in the foreground a sad personification of the Amsterdam Theatre with a beehive in her hand, to the left of her the muse Melpomene. At the right in the foreground, a deceased man (possibly the fellow tenant Pieter de la Croix, who died in 1687) is robbed of his shroud by a man with a beret on his head and a cash box under his arm (probably Bidloo). Audiences with donkey ears walk through the dilapidated arch to the theatre but are chased away by Apollo. Apollo stands in front of a gate with the portraits of Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, Joost van den Vondel and Gerbrand Adriaensz on the left, from top to bottom. Wider. Behind it, the sater Marsyas tied to a tree. All the way in the background Pegasus on Mount Parnassus.
