Chaitya in the Karli Caves in India, anonymous, 1870 - 1890 Canvas Print

This photo shows the chaitya (the shrine) of the largest of a group of caves in Karli, in the western Indian state of Maharastra. This cave is originally Buddhist and is associated with one of the schools of early Buddhism, called Mahāsāṃghika. In this photo you can see the stupa, from 120 n. Chr., with an umbrella-shaped lid that is rare under these caves. Outside the cave is a Hindu temple to the goddess Ekvira of the Koli, the fishermen.
