Collar composed of several pieces of needle lace with flowers and exotic fruits, anonymous, c. 1870 - c. 1899 Canvas Print
Collar composed of one or more pieces of natural needle lace: Argentan lace. Curved strip-shaped model. Pattern with flowers, leaves and fruits. A symmetrical motif in the middle consists of a semicircular arch topped by a rosette. Four long feathered leaves spring on top of each other from the rosette and bend over the arch. Under the arch a five-lobed flower, possibly a French lily. The rest of the pattern is not entirely symmetrical and consists of flowers (carnations, rosette flowers), exotic fruits including a pomegranate motif and volutes. It is reminiscent of patterns of the silk fabrics of ca. 1715-1725, which in turn could have been inspired by lace patterns. The motifs are made with feston stitches with cutouts, decorative stitches and cordons with and without picots around, among other things, flower hearts. The motifs are connected by a hexagonal mesh soil. The meshes are sewn over densely with feston stitches and provided with picots, the characteristics of the Argentan soil. The lace was made in France and dated to the second quarter of the 18th century. The collar was composed in the Netherlands at the end of the 19th century. These types of compositions were also widely done in Italy (Burano) and in Belgium during this period.
