Cornelis Tromp’s Weapon Rack, anonymous, c. 1650 - c. 1679 Canvas Print

Cornelis Tromp’s Weapon Rack, anonymous, c. 1650 - c. 1679 Canvas Print

A red lacquered and gold-plated coat of arms rack after the European model. The carving of the rack shows characteristics of carving from North Vietnam, such as the wavy shapes of the lion heads of the rack. Cornelis Tromp received the coat of arms rack with accompanying weapons and accessories as a gift from his childhood friend Cornelis Wemans, who lives in Batavia. On 18 March 1680, Wemans sent the gift to Tromp together with some boxes of tea as evidenced by a covering letter. He thanked Tromp, who had sent him a portrait of himself. The rack and the weapons do not originally belong together, but were probably sought together by Wemans. In the current line-up, six pistols from Tromp's possession have been added to the rack. Tromp gave the coat of arms rack an important place in his house on the Herengracht and added various weapons with a different origin.
