Cup, anonymous, c. 1660 Canvas Print
Gold jar, fully enamelled on a white long distance. The base of the cup, with flat stand ring with diamond pattern, is shaped like a hill with a gnarled trunk on top, which serves as the trunk of the cup. Enamelled gold figures are attached to the fully enamel-covered base. Against the trunk sits Orpheus, playing on his viola. At his feet are amors, mermaids and many birds, including a peacock, a rooster, a parrot, two swans and two eagles. The top of the trunk is surrounded by amors and red enamelled tongues, which enclose the base of the cuppa. On the outside of the cuppa are painted four representations from the Metamorphoses of Ovid: the creation of heaven and earth (Ovid, Metamorphoses 1, 21-75); the creation of man (Ovid, Metamorphoses 1, 76-88); the Golden Age (Ovid, Metamorphoses 1, 89-112) and the Silver Age (Ovid, Metamorphoses 1, 113-124). The performances are separated by poplars. On the inside of the cuppa are also four scenes painted from the Metamorphoses: the Copper and Iron Age (Ovid, Metamorphoses 1, 125-150); the Titans Battle (Ovid, Metamorphoses 1, 151-165); a meeting of gods (Ovid, Metamorphoses 1, 166-261) and the flood with Deucalion and Pyrrha (Ovid, Metamorphoses 1, 262-312). The scenes are separated by plane trees. A hedgehog is painted in the center of the cuppa.
