De arts als engel, Hendrick Goltzius (workshop of), 1587 Canvas Print
In a house, a man lies sick in bed, caring for family members around him. A doctor sits by his bed talking. In the room on the right you can see what has happened to the man since his fall (see the first print of the series): his head is connected and his leg is splinted. In the foreground an angel, standing in the middle of a book and medical instruments. Latin and Greek texts engraved under the performance and (outside the plate edge but on the same sheet) a printed Dutch text, explaining that the doctor is seen as an angel when he has provided the sick first aid. This print is part of a series of four prints depicting how the doctor is considered and appreciated during his visit to a sick person: upon entering as a god, after the first aid as an angel, in healing as a human being and when to pay as a devil.
