The departure of the twelve Dutch merchant ships from portsmouth harbour, after the lifting of the embargo, 2 June 1833. The British embargo was established around November 1832 to persuade the Dutch to hand over the Citadel of Antwerp to Belgium. All Dutch ships in British ports were chained. First record in a series of three. On one of the department stores on the right you can read 'Van den Bergh & Son'. At the bottom of the margin the names of the ships. The coat of arms of King William I at the bottom centrally between the Dutch and English title and mission.
