Diamond with Prince Maurice in praying posture, anonymous, c. 1618 - c. 1620 Canvas Print
Large window coming from the monastery of St Agatha near Cuyk. Prince Maurice in gilded armor, with ermine cloak and pleated collar, bareheaded, in praying position, kneeling on a prayer chair in front of a lectern on which a book. The lectern is on a table with a dark blue rug covered with golden fringe. Helmet and gloves lie on the floor in front of the table. The prince is in a dome carried by four freestanding Corinthian columns; above his head a canopy from which a laurel wreath depends. The dome is crowned by the coat of arms of Maurits and the motto of the Order of the Garter: 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' (Shame on him who thinks evil of it). Weapon supported by two running youngsters. The coat of arms leans against the top of the dome. Beneath this scene are fragments of architecture that have been applied injudiciously. On the right lies a young woman kneeling with her hands raised. She wears a yellow silk cloak with ermine lined. The face was added in oil paint in 1891.
