Dish with the Expulsion from Paradise, anonymous, c. 1535 - c. 1545 Canvas Print
Round dish of multicolored painted majolica with the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and the Expulsion of Adam and Eve from paradise. Paradise is presented as a walled garden. Adam and Eve walk on the wall, who are sent out of paradise by a flying angel. Within the wall, Adam and Eve lie on the ground, with their firstborn son Cain between them. Adam and Eve have as attributes a hoe and a coil; symbols for physical labor. Kain looks into the mirror of self-knowledge as the body of his murdered brother Abel burns in front of him. A lamb's head protrudes from the sea of fire as a symbol for God's sacrifice, Christ, that will redeem man. An angel also hovers by the fire, holding a banderole on which an illegible text has been written.
