Dress with Hobble Skirt, Antoinetta Francisca Helena Mulder, c. 1911 - c. 1912 Canvas Print
After 1908, the clandestine line of the 'Style Directoire' and 'Style Empire' introduced by Paul Poiret also continued in Dutch fashion. A right silhouette was already known here in modest circles before that time. From 1899 onwards, the 'Vereeniging voor Verbetering van Vrouwenkleeding' had tried with varying degrees of success to draw attention to the dangers of the wasp waist for health. She promoted the wearing of dresses with a high waist and ankle-length, straight skirts, which, however, should not hinder freedom of movement. Of course, this small association could not prevent the skirts, following paris between 1908 and 1911, from becoming ever narrower. As a result, the fashionable woman was eventually only able to move foot by foot and the 'stumbling gown' was born.
