Drunken peasant couple, Johann Theodor de Bry, 1596 Canvas Print

In a landscape a drunken couple walks: Nu ben ick lustich fijn ende fris - Maer ten is alle daechs gheen kermis, it sounds from the mouth of the man. He is supported by a woman who answers him: Ja lieve hannen men seyt ghewis - Waer vruecht in huys, daer druck for duer is. The Dutch text can be read in the epigram as a dialogue between the drunk farmer and the farmer's wife. It has been supplemented with a German equivalent. Why the figures are called farmer and farmer's wife is actually not clear. The clothing of the man and his beret with feather does not really resemble that of a farmer and the sword, worn here by the woman, seems to be an improper attribute for someone from the peasantry. No. 35 from the first edition of 1596, no. 56 in extended edition from 1611.
