Enthroning Pope Adrian VI, Jan Wandelaar, 1727 Canvas Print
Two prints on a sheet. Left: In the middle, Pope Adrian VI is enthroned. He wears the tiara, the cappa magna and the keys of Peter. Two putti sit on the back of the throne on either side of a medallion with the letters SPQR (Senatus Populus Que Romanus). At the top left is Minerva. To the right is an angel a bishop with a staff, fasces and a shield. Under Adrian's feet is a part of the title of the book and below it 'E Minima [re] Maxima' (from something small comes the big), above a few people in a procession. Adrian's right hand rests on the shoulder of probably Charles V. The pope's left hand blesses a cardinal, possibly William of Enckevoirt. Right: Vignette with in the middle the Temple of Virtue. In a medallion on the temple an emblem and the motto Virtutis Gloria Merces. The emblem shows some men trying to climb a tree. On either side of the temple the personification Wisdom. She hands a young man a laurel wreath. Printing brand by Jacob van Poolsum.
