Expulsion of the Jesuits, Gabriel Jacques de Saint-Aubin, 1761 Canvas Print
A political print on the occasion of the anti-Jesuit promulgation of August 6, 1761. Two medallions framed with attributes. At the top the all-seeing eye and a scale, on the right the hand of justice, on the left a sword. At the bottom a fox that loses its tail, from one of the fables of Aesop. In the left medallion a book burning of the writings of the order, including works by Mariana, Busembaum and Suarez. A man tears a book to pieces, and a Jesuit runs away. On the stairs a figure with a frame in his hands. Under the performance the title in Latin and the date: Combustis libris VI die Augusti, M.D.CC.LXI. In the medallion on the right, two students run away from the Collège Louis-le-Grand. One points to the lines that are hung on the door frame. On the right is a Jesuit, looking at his broken stick on the ground. Under the performance the title in Latin and the date: Perversis tandem deletis scholis. M.D.CC.LXI. The whole is on a piedestal with a six-line text in French on it.
