Façade of the Rijksmuseum around 1888, 1884 - 1892 Canvas Print
The Rijksmuseum with the Singelgracht in the foreground in which the reflection of the museum can be seen. Both main entrances are still under construction. To the west of the museum, a canal runs from stadhouderskade to Jan Luykenstraat. There are no buildings behind the museum yet. Rijksmuseum, as seen from the northwest. Both entrances are still under construction. In 1892, the moat to the west of the museum was muffled. In order to prepare the soil for construction, several ditches, including the wide Mennonites, had to be dampened. Part of the city canal had to be plastered. More than a third of the site had to be reclaimed on the water! The necessary soil for the terrain and damping of the ditches was obtained, among other things, by digging a moat from the stadssingel cia the current Jan Luykenstraat to the Honthorststraat and from there in a kink to the Boerenwetering. This moat was muffled in 1892.
