Family of Calas in prison, Christian Friedrich Fritzsch, 1766 Canvas Print

The French merchant Jean Calas from Toulouse was falsely accused of murdering his 30-year-old son in 1761. Calas (Calvinist) is said to have killed his son because he wanted to convert to Catholicism. His family, which Voltaire took care of, is in prison here. On the right are mother and eldest daughter, behind this is the youngest daughter. The second son leans on a chair on the left and stands next to Mr La Vaysse who reads out a document from which the family draws hope. In March 1762 Calas was put to death. On the sheet below the show there is a text in Dutch in two columns. As a result of this event, Voltaire wrote his 'Traité de la tolerance'.
