Farewell to Jean Calas in prison, Christian Friedrich Fritzsch, 1769 Canvas Print
The French merchant Jean Calas from Toulouse was falsely accused in 1761 of murdering Marc Antoine, his 30-year-old son. Calas (Calvinist) is said to have killed his son because he wanted to convert to Catholicism. In March 1762, Calas was put to death. His family, which Voltaire took care of, is in prison here. In the middle is Calas itself. A man takes him out of the shackles to lead him to the scaffold. To his left are his second son and two daughters. At the door on the far left, two militaries let in a clergyman. On the far right sits in a chair Calas' wife who has passed out. Lawyer Gaubert Lavaysse and the maid try to bring her back to consciousness. On the sheet below the representation there is a text in Dutch in two columns. Following this event, Voltaire wrote his 'Traité de la tolerance'.
