Flower still life with an emperor's crown in a stone niche, Jacob Vosmaer, 1613 Canvas Print
The fully signed and dated panel ("Jakob Vosmaer 1613") shows in a stone niche a large, rich flower bouquet, arranged in a heavy, earthenware vase with refined rosettes. Vosmaer painted a splendor of flowers, including rare and also precious species. The orange emperor's crown, originating from Asia Minor, had been introduced to Europe from Turkey, via Vienna, only a few decades earlier. Around the majestic flower, roses, irises, tulips, carnations and lilies are displayed. Through the application of various lighting effects – from bright highlights and refined colour reflections to strong drop shadows – the cracks and cracks in the wallwork, the fallen petals and the small mouse, Vosmaer was able to create a carefully staged, narrative composition.
