Folding fan with double sheet of green painted paper on an unadorned wooden frame, anonymous, c. 1790 - c. 1800 Canvas Print

Folding fan with double sheet of green painted paper on an unadorned wooden frame. 24 contiguous legs. In addition to this copy, the Van Eeghen collection (now at the KOG) contains a number of these simple fans with a sheet of plain green paper. Although several copies have been preserved and it could be deduced from this that these fans were used quite widely, to date almost nothing is known about the origin or about the use. Only one mention of this specific type of fans is known and can be found in an advertisement from the Amsterdamsche Courant of 31 July 1798, in which a certain Pierre Felgines states that he has established himself independently and 'Makes, sells, exchanges and amazes all kinds of umbrellas, parasols and green waayers...'.
