Folding range with goatskin leaf, on which with gouache the Colosseum, the thermal baths of Caracalla (l) and the Tomb of Caecilia Metella (r), on ivory frame, Camillo Buti, in or before 1787 Canvas Print
Folding range (souvenir range) with goatskin leaf, divided into three fields with gouache at the front with the Colosseum in the flat-filling, central, oval medallion, on the left in a round medallion in a white field the thermal baths of Caracalla and on the right in a ditto medallion and field, the Tomb of Caecilia Metella. For the ornamental part of the fan, Buti was inspired by the paintings from the Villa Negroni, discovered in 1777. The palmet edges above the left and right fields are derived from chambers C and G. (For the Villa Negroni see, H. Joyce, 'The Ancient Frescoes from the Villa Negroni', The Art Bulletin LXV (3), 1983, pp.423-40) On the back are three, different colored butterflies asymmetrically distributed over the leaf, on which further in the middle an ornament with leaf and flower motif. The fan is signed on the sheet in the lower right corner at the back and dated: 'Camillo Buti Roma 1787'. Mounted à l'anglaise on ivory frame. The ends of the legs are extra reinforced at the back. A small mother-of-pearl circle is placed around the closing pin. Neo-class sicism.
