Folding range with leaf on which in watercolor Vertumnus & Pomona, on a carved and leaf silver and - gold frame with mother of pearl. 22 contiguous legs, cut out and ajour edited. The parchment leaf is painted with watercolor. Ovid (43 BC-18 AD) recounts in his 'Metamorphoses' (XIV:623-771) the countless guises that the god Vertumnus had to take on before he could win over the nymph Pomona. it was only after he had made a plea for love in the form of an old lady and then took the form of a young man that Pomona became his. The front of the fan is a Bloemaert-like representation. On the back of the leaf are a shepherd and a herdin in a Boucher-like performance. On the front of the leaf, a particularly finely painted, ornamental edge, including two mermaids in the left corner and a deer followed by a dog in the right corner, ensures the transition between the representation and the frame. The frame is strikingly decorated with swinging ribbons, between which in this case flowers and insects. In the central field most likely signing a prenup. Due to the presence of the matchmaker, a connection is made with the scene on the leaf at Vertumnus, in the guis of an old female, acting as his own matchmaker. [see lit. 1992]
