Folding range with leather leaf on which in watercolor Eliëzer and Rebecca at the source, on a frame of ajour and embossed mother of pearl, anonymous, c. 1775 Canvas Print
Folding range with leather leaf showing the bible story of Eliëzer and Rebecca. Eliëzer gives Rebecca a ring and holds two more bracelets in his right hand. There is a striking discrepancy between the ornamentation on the sheet in a Louis XV style and that on the frame, which is executed in Louis XIV style. Furthermore, the theme chosen for the decoration of the frame, country life, does not fit in at all with the presentation of the magazine. So an older leaf may have been applied to a new frame here. The back of the sheet is unpainted. On the frame, the usual connection has been made between pastoral and love symbolism. In the middle reserve are a countryman and a herdin on a pile of haystacks. In the medallions on either side of it, there is an open basket between a number of hayfields from which two birds fly away. on the outside legs another putto with flower basket and two different pastoral trophies. [See Du Mortier, 1992]. The frame has 22 contiguous legs of ajour and embossed cut mother-of-pearl. The locking pin is made of sharpened red glass.
