Model: because the two rightmost legs have been glued together in the past, the fan nowadays has an asymmetrical decoration and now only the left reserve is visible with an inverted vase from which water flows. A vase or jug was considered an attribute of the water nymphs or Naiads, who lived by the water. Embellishment: The centrally depicted nymph leans on a vase and watches pan, her master, suddenly rise from the water with a pan flute in hand. At her feet, a putto bends over a vase. The nymph on the right is busy with her toilet and looks in a mirror, which is held up in front of her by a putto. The two nymphs in the background appear to be engaged in conversation. In Greek mythology, nymphs were originally nubile girls; later they became goddesses, but they always remained the symbol of the young and beautiful woman. The mythological representation is surrounded by an edge of golden fruit ebb leaves in the style of the French engraver Jean Le Pautre (1618-1682). In particular, the somewhat lumpy shape of the fruits and the way in which they have been arranged between the leaf and foliage are very similar to the examples on the prints from the series 'Frises, Feulïllages ou Tritons Marins a la Romaine', which appeared in Paris between 1657 and 1663. On the frame and on the back of the leaf, small acanthus-like ornaments are painted in silver. Perhaps this painting was intended as an imitation of the turtle frames, inlaid with silver wire, that came into fashion at the end of the 17th century.
