Folding fan with sheet of paper on which in gouache 'The Judgement of Paris', on a frame of mother-of-pearl ajour and embossed with 'métal en quatre couleur'. In particular, finely painted, central field, the king's son and shepherd Paris designates the goddess Aphrodite as the winner of the beauty contest that had been fought between her and the goddesses Athena and Hera. Hera with the peacock and Athena with helmet and shield look on from a cloud in the distance. The story about 'The Judgment of Paris', which was chronicled in the 1st century AD by Lucianus of Samosata (ca. 120-180 AD), was published many times in Dutch translations in the course of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. With Van Mander (1548-1606), Krul (1601/2-1646) and Poot (1689-1733) it took on a moralizing tone and Paris was a frivolous young man, who preferred the sensuous pleasures (Aphrodite) to wisdom (Athena) and power (Hera). In another interpretation, the story was used as a praise of the woman who united all the qualities from which Paris had to choose. It seems as if the medallions are hung left and right on twisted cords, which depend further through rings along the edge of the leaf. On top of the frame of these medallions, in which various wedding symbols, such as a wedding altar with two turtle doves and a dog, are two torteling pigeons. In the painting on the back, these motifs return. The frame is almost entirely filled by a gallant party with entangled love couples, musicians and singers surrounded by putti with flower garlands. In an oval on the right misfit a putto with an open mousetrap.
