Four women and a man, Esaias Boursse, 1662 Canvas Print
Outside on uneven ground, a group of people is drawn. At the far left of a slope, a woman sits squatting, eyes closed. She wears a Portuguese blouse with V-neck and long sleeves (hatte), a long wrap skirt (redda) and a rolled-up cloth around the head. The woman next to her is standing back a bit, her feet are hiding behind the slope. She also wears a wrap skirt tied at the waist, a Portuguese blouse and a rolled-up headscarf that depends on her shoulders. On her head is a pitcher (kalaya). Seen between them in a sketchy move by a woman from behind. On the right is a man with his arms folded in front of the abdomen. He wears a wide hip dress (veshti, lungi), tied in a South Indian way (as dhoti) and rolled over at the waist; a second long cloth (chadar) hangs around his shoulders. The woman squatting in front of him on the right wears a Portuguese blouse (hatte), a long wrap skirt (redda) and a rolled cloth around her head. Next to her on the ground is an earthen pitcher (kalaya). Sheet 46 from a sketchbook with 117 sheets.
