French artist's album, various makers, c. 1880 - c. 1900 Canvas Print
Scrapbook in a green belt. Originally it was intended to be used as a cash book. The lined sheets contain a total of 135 photos, drawings and an etching. These include photographs of paintings, drawings, prints and frescoes, including by Jean-Louis or Jean-François Brémond, Alfred Philippe Roll, Horace Vernet, Albert Besnard, Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, Jean-Jacques Scherrer, Georges Washington, Gustave Courbet, Michelangelo, P. Lehoux, Jean-Léon Gérôme, R. Collin and Paul Janoudet. The album also includes recordings of people and of sights in Rome, Genoa, Dijon, Marseille, the Alps and presumably on the French west coast. There are also photographs of paintings-covered walls, probably made during exhibitions or salons. It is striking that there are several recordings of a hunter, printed in various photographic techniques. The album probably served as a source of inspiration for an as yet unknown French artist.
