French courtier following the Edict of 1633, Abraham Bosse, 1633 Canvas Print
A young courtier stands with hat in hand, in a room. On the chair behind him are luxuriously made pants and an embroidered doublet. The young man gives his lackey permission to sell these luxurious garments to a second-hand shop. He himself wears a doublet and collar without decoration and simple knee pants, so that he complies with the edict of November 18, 1633. This law forbade embroideries of gold and silver thread and trimmings of lace. The caption states that the courtier is uncomfortable with too much luxury and that he likes to obey the king's laws. The lackey notes that only the rag man still gives money for the luxury garments.
