Frisian with the Punishment of Niobe, Jan Saenredam, 1596 - 1652 Canvas Print
Print with a frieze from eight plates. The performance of the frieze contains four scenes that tell the story of Niobe. Niobe was tanatalus' daughter. During the festivities in Thebe in honour of Latona, the mother of Apollo and Diana, Niobe blames the Thebanen for sacrificing to Latona (centre and right). The goddess Latona complains to her two children, who then avenge her honor by killing the fourteen children of Niobe with arrows (center and left). On the far left is Niobe, who is trying to protect her children. The print has a Latin caption per plate.
