Goblet with cover, Reinier van Jaersvelt, 1546 - 1547 Canvas Print
The goblet has a glass funnel-shaped chalice decorated with vertical ribs above a steeply ascending, multiple articulated gilded silver base. The profiled, bulging gilt silver lid is topped by a trunk around which a fleuron with leaf ornaments and volutes inlaid with pearls is applied and on which a wild boar sits as a crowning. The frame is decorated with decorative elements derived from Mannerism: band work and lion masks on the foot, satyr heads on the nodus and a crowning flower basket on the lid. At the top of the lid is a continuous representation with figures derived from classical antiquity driven that has the Triumph of faith as its subject. The inside of the lid is decorated with a walking scene with all kinds of animals in paradise. In the middle of this, the body of a unicorn protrudes that, when the lid is placed on the jar, can be seen through the glass.
